I don’t typically post book reviews on my blog, but I’m always looking for a good book so I figured you might appreciate a recommendation. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is one I can recommend without hesitation. The premise is fascinating – what if you could have a re-do of your life? Say Yes instead of No to that guy who asked you out? Stick with the swimming lessons? Take that vacation with your best friend you backed out of? When Nora, the main character in this book, is living the last moments of her life, she finds herself in a library, a vast building with millions of books crammed on shelves going all the way up to the ceiling. And each book is about her – her life’s story if she had chosen differently when she did xxxxx. Every single small decision you make has an impact, sends your life in a slightly (or sometimes vastly) different direction. And there’s a book in the Midnight Library that details what you would have been if you’d made a different choice. Don’t you find that fascinating?
The plot isn’t a fast-moving page-turner, but the story is so strong, and Nora’s experiences are so compelling, I couldn’t put the book down. Apparently I’m not the only one, since it has become a mega-bestseller. I don’t always trust the New York Times bestseller list, but this book is a winner. The ending is a bit predictable, but imminently satisfying anyway. I highly recommend it.
